Meditation and Smoking Reduction
Every year more than 440,000 deaths occurred in the United
States because of Cigarette smoking, 8.6 million people suffering from a
serious smoking-related illness.
Cigarette addiction is tough to overcome.
A new study published in Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences reports that, a short course of training in
mindfulness meditation is significant spontaneous reductions in both objective
and subjective measures of smoking in a group of young adults, compared to
another group that received the same amount of relaxation training
.
Both nonsmokers and smokers were included in the study,
which also measured activation in brain areas associated with self-control.
Prior to the 2-week meditation or relaxation course, smokers showed reduced
activity in the anterior cingulate cortex ( ACC) ,a brain area associated with self-control,
compared to nonsmokers.
